Expedition Exceed Expectations!
Huatta-Southern Cross was honored to team up with Eagle Condor for a fantastic expedition! Projects completed included building a bathroom at the local elementary school (which included digging trenches for the walls, installing the plumbing and digging a hole for the septic tank), building a new roof, setting up 2 greenhouses, painting desks and providing a community art project. Below are quotes from those on the expedition: "...these kids had never seen bubbles, never used paintbrushes, never had a photo taken of themselves. We finished by painting chalkboards on the wall of the classroom and did a round of face painting for the kids. It was a very happy time.... ""Our July expedition to Peru was fabulous! We had the privilege of being the first group to work in the Huatta community. Upon our arrival everyone was off selling goods in the market, but as we got to work building a new roof for the schoolhouse children started trickling in, curiously watching this new group of Gringos!
Our group was so hard working that with the help of the school children we finished the work on the roof within just a few days! We then got to work painting all of the schoolhouse furniture. The last day we threw a big goodbye party for the children and teachers complete with food, pinatas, games and prizes! What an amazing experience and an expedition I will never forget! I look forward to going back again!" |
Follow the Progress on our Children's Blog with our Summer Interns! (For full accounts
go to our children's blog)
Children get one-on-one attention, care, and training with interns at Southern Cross. Our summer interns have done an outstanding job! For a treat, follow their activities on our blog! Here are some excerpts:
"On our first activity only 7 kids stayed but by the end o f the week 30 were there. The first day we went around telling them why we had come and how long we were staying. One of the first kids that warmed up to us was Kevin. He has a great spirit about him, is 12 years old and is in 6th grade. He is really bright and takes a lot of initiative in the activities. We found out from Feliciana his father abandoned him and his mother works far away. He lives with his grandparents and comes to center everyday after school...." (Chris & Kimball Jensen at El Bichito)
"We've started "Career Day" and "Health Day" and invited a friend who works in the local mine to talk to the kids about career options. The next week we brought a tour guide. They taught the kids about the importance of getting an education, and then finding a job, and told them about their profession. It was the first time the older kids (16-18) stayed after eating..." (Nancy & Jared Huber at El Bichito)
"I'm not sure if I told you I carved a baseball bat, but I made a rudimentary bat that is still slightly curved so we can play baseball with the kids of the Aldea. It is awesome! (If I do say so myself). We have also been playing some volleyball, which is a favorite of many of the girls here. Another great game is tree tag and 'monkeying around'...(Dan Forsyth)
"....my bed that broke my back the first week is now comfortable...the kids that pushed my buttons the first week now make me wanna cry I love them so much...the Spanish that gave me headache after headache is now just a fun game to see how much I can understand...the food that made me throw up the first week, well, still makes me throw up ha ha...." (Natalie Bell)
