Appreciation to Aldea Intern!

Brian2

Brian Pulsipher interned at the Aldea for over 3 months working with the children and community.  Among his many accomplishments were getting individual help for some of the handicapped children at the home and doing a community clothes drive! (The first of it's kind!)  Thank you Brian for all the love and goodness you shared!

First Expedition of 2010 Makes a Difference!
Dec.2010Exp

People going on Expeditions are looking to make a difference now and into the future. Those on our Dec/Jan expedition did just that. This is an excerpt from a volunteer on the trip:

Dina, Carmen, Israel, Eva, Lazaro, Marta, Madai and their mother moved to Puylucana because they heard of El Bichito. The children show signs of being severely malnourished. The family had no way of supporting themselves. The mother doesn't make enough money to pay rent, so the landlord lets them live in a one-room mud hut with a gaping hole in the tin roof. Three small beds take up most of the room where all eight sleep. This family has only what is in two large sacks. They share a "kitchen" with the landlord in an adjoining mud hut you wouldn't feed your animals in. Often these children have no food other than what they get at El Bichito. Their mother makes whatever she can by doing laundry and cleaning which is usually 3 soles = $1, a day.  She can't even afford to put clothes and shoes on her own children.  The oldest child, Dina, who is fifteen, has not been able to go to school because the family cannot afford the school fees and school uniform required for secondary school. She is the primary caretaker of the family while her mother works. We committed to help the family as long as the mother sends the children to school.

Big thanks for all those who participated! Walls downstairs were scrubbed and repaired while upstairs electricity was installed in each room! Then the walls began to be plastered and two were even painted!  As you can see here, one of the rooms was ready to go for the New Year's party!  We're ready to start furnishing the rooms and finish the bathroom!

Warm Welcome to New Partners, Board Members, Chapter Presidents, and Volunteers!

Newest Partner! HeART Exchange:
dropincenters3
Southern Cross has been invited to participate with HeART Exchange during our expeditions.  The intent is to bridge the gap of language, culture and geography -  to open up a world to children they may have not known. If we can help a child in Uganda tell a story to a child in Nepal, who will then tell their story to a child in Peru, and so on... we give them a chance to understand and relate to other children and cultures. They essentially travel the world through the drawings of their international peers.  Art exchanges will take place on our Peru trip in June, & on the Ecuador and Colombia expeditions in August. To find more information on HeArt click on HeART!
