New Child at Sunflower Home Is Looking For A Sponsor!

Floyd

Floyd, who goes by Floy, came to our home in February, was born in Puerto Maldonado and is 13. Floyd's father went to work one day and never returned. His mother turned to alcohol, and Floyd eventually left to live on the streets.  Floyd is adjusting well to life at The Sunflower Home. Floyd is happiest when playing. He enjoys playing soccer and having water fights. In school, he enjoys studying science and social studies. Floyd can understand and speak English well.

My Life at The Sunflower
By Adriel Garcia Perez

(Dictated to & translated by Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

Adriel2
Who am I?

I am Adriel Garcia Perez.  My birthday is December 12, in the year 1991. I like my birthday because I eat a chocolate cake and am happy. I like healthy foods.  For example, I like cauliflower and broccoli and other healthy foods. I also like strawberry cookies. I also like being a mechanic among other things. I like making beautiful things and things that older people can make. My personality is very good.  I work well doing things such as gardening. I am calm and well-behaved. I am not mischievous. I am also a little funny and make a few jokes. I am good to others.

Before The Sunflower
I was born in Espinar, in the community of Lamandozca. I grew big, as big as I am now. In my family, there is my mom, dad, and sisters. We are eight in total. We have a lot of people in our family and they could not take good care of us so they had to give some of us up. Now, at this orphanage, we have a future.

Now
Before, I lived in Espinar, and now I live here in the orphanage. Here, I have clothes, healthy foods, books, studies, games, a wardrobe, and other things here in the orphanage. My day is wonderful because I have studies and work. I also have a little time to play sports and other things.  In this orphanage, I feel very happy because I have everything and am missing nothing in this place.

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is a home where boys and girls live and also where there are people who help all the boys and girls like Papi Juan, Mami Delia, my Aunt Colleen, and others. It is important because people from the United States help the children on the street and poor orphans.  To me, The Sunflower is a special place.  It's a home with love and caring. I want The Sunflower to set good examples for the young children and to stay here for a long time.

My Future
After high school, I want to study more at a university and afterwards, more. I want to be a police officer and doctor because then I can cure my family when they are sick.  If I am a police officer, I can help the children on the streets and help control the bad people.  I want to travel to, and live in, the United States and study English because my family and I are poor.  I want to help others not be poor.

Kids & Adults Flipped Over February Educational Expedition:

What folks from the trip are saying:

"The kids went crazy over the gymnastics. I took down instructional materials and DVD's. Gladys was really excited about it.  She wants to keep teaching the kids while I am not there. Actually Gladys is quite the gymnast! I did some different stunts with her and she caught on really fast!  Kind of fun! Anyway, I absolutely loved spending most of the time at the orphanage with the kids. I just want to be able to do so much more!  (Margo Flint)"

I know I only have a few minutes to write this email.  I just wanted you to know that the first day of summer school was a great success.  All seemed to go well.  I teamed up with Melissa and Landon to teach English grammar/phrases.  Five groups rotated through our classroom, and by the end of the day, we were worn out.  (Pam Merrill's email excerpt - to read more see the Sunflower Blog)

"One of my favorite moments from this Education Expedition was learning about the kids and their dreams.  I had the opportunity of teaching the career class, and for one of our activities the kids made dream boards.  Each child had a piece of paper that they were to decorate with pictures of what they would like to be in the future, or things that they would like to have in the future.  The kids looked through newspapers, trying to find specific pictures...from doctors to soccer players to astronauts.  Every child was expressing themselves through these pictures.  The kids dream of having professions, they dream of having a home, and they dream of having families."  (Joy Mano)

New Southern Cross Funded Home Partnership!

Southern Cross Humanitarian is excited to announce a new partnership with Aldea Infantil, an orphanage to the south of Trujillo, Peru, managed by Sra. Blanca Esther Castillo Martell. The basic homes in this orphanage (shelters housing 10 children each with a small kitchen and living room) are a European concept built with government aiAldeainfantil2d. Up-keep, daily needs of the children and educational programs have been left to those running the home. Over 70 beautiful children, at the Aldea Infantil, work their land and have established a successful strawberry industry (they are delicious!), have a growing guinea pig production (they are big!) and are planning to create a dairy, having just gotten their first donated cow, thanks to the family of our first placed intern at Aldea. Southern Cross will be working with the Aldea providing approved internships and help to enhance and expand their self-sufficiency efforts.
Fun at the Sunflower!

Play In Their Day -
The Sorenson Founda
playinthedaytion is supporting initial efforts, of Margo Flint and Kenny Clayton, to put "play in the day" of the Sunflower children so they can reach international children's rights health & recreation objectives.

Funding Futures Summer Internships
- Word is our 4 boys on summer internships had a great t
ime and were adored!  The leadership at Porcon could not say enough good things about Adriel and Carlos and their work ethics. Hilario and Wilfredo's soccer camps were a big hit as well.

Back to School & Golden Rule - Backpacks filled, the children went back to school this week ready for the new year.  Our interns met with the boys and girls to discuss the routines for school day mornings.  Leo had the kids meet with their roommates to write out rules for consistency, and the February expedition group took the children shoe shopping. Thanks to all those who donated for new back to school shoes!

Computer Skills -
Each child is learning keyboarding on a regular basis.  Some of the smaller children who can't type yet are working on "painting" with the mouse.  Thanks to the interns at the home for providing these daily lessons.

Heartbeats!

"When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable heartbeats."

· Big thanks to the efforts of Margo Flint,
MarcosKenny Clayton, of Layton UT, and Ability Found, a non-profit organization providing specialized strollers and wheelchairs free of charge. Together they helped outfit Marcos, a child with cerebral palsy sponsored by Becky Berry of Atherton, CA, with a brand new specialized stroller.  "When we put Marcos in that specialized stroller and took him around in it he was smiling from ear to ear.  It was precious to see his little face and feel his spirit soar as he became a part of the other children's activities.  He could now dance with them and enjoy the music and enjoy all the other children."  (Margo Flint)

· Shout out for Corporate Alliance, based here in SLC, for selecting Southern Cross to be their "Charity at the month" to present at their corporate luncheons.

· Gerald Budge, of St. George, UT, took Albertson Registration forms to neighbors and friends and ask them to join under Southern Cross.  Thank you Gerald! Those 10 new forms will help a lot!

· Kate Keethler's bookclub, of Chicago IL, was mentioned on Oprah's website- Kate went on the December Expedition and learned about Southern Cross from the bookclub's choice of reading: The Sunflower. Thanks for letting us know Kate!

· Big thanks to our Canadian Chapter Presidents Fred and Janet McCullough and their successful campaign to sell items online for Southern Cross. To find items, they took out the following ad in their local newspaper:
WE ARE LOOKING FOR GOOD RE-SALABLE ITEMS THAT WE CAN SELL WITH ALL THE PROCEEDS GOING TO THE "SUNFLOWER ORPHANAGE." THIS ORPHANAGE IS SUPPORTED BY "SOUTHERN CROSS HUMNITARIAN" http://thesunflowerorphanage.blog
