New Child at Sunflower Home:
Seems like all the children at the Sunflower home are sweethearts, and Elizabeth is no exception. She is 9 years old, was born in Urabamba and has two younger siblings. Her mother, and a social worker, brought 'Lisabeth to El Girasol because her mom could no longer take care of her. We are fortunate to have her.
Lisabeth has adjusted well to the Sunflower, she loves to help with laundry and loves being around so many other children. Please consider being a sponsor for Elizabeth. For more information go to Sponsor-a-child on our website.
Many Children Need Sponsors!! There are children at the Sunflower home and in our Drop-in Centers that need your help. Your monthly sponsorship money
provides shelter, hygiene, food, education, skill training, psychological care - a future.
Please start making the difference today by heading to our sponsorship page at www.sxhu.org or contact laura@sxhu.org. |
Spotlight:
The Life of Maria
(Dictated to & translated by 2007-08 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)
The Sunflower By Maria Churata Puma
Who am I? My name is Maria. I like dolls a lot. They are my favorite. My birthday is November 23. This year I want to eat chocolate cake. I am twelve years old, and I like cookies with cream. My favorite foods are turkey and rice with chicken. I like to help my Aunt Colleen a lot because it is good, and I also like to help other adults. I want to be a good, friendly, and smart person.
Before The Sunflower I was born in Wakawasi. I lived with my mom and dad and my brothers and sisters. When I grow up I want my family to be a mom, dad, and brothers and sisters. I came here because there was no money to take care of me. I feel happy here with my friends.

Now I live in the home of The Sunflower. I have everything there is. I have a bed, a wardrobe, and also a teacher Colleen who is a good teacher. I always love my Aunt Colleen a lot. When my room wins being the most clean, she takes us to eat ice cream with the others who won. She is very kind and she always shares love and helps this home After she left to Ecuador and the United States, she returned here with the group to help us a lot and teach English. She is always a good friend to me.
What is The Sunflower? This home, The Sunflower, has many poor children without mothers and fathers. Good people from the United States help us in this home of The Sunflower.
My Future When I'm finished with school, I want my Aunt Colleen and Mami Laura to come visit. I also want to go to the United States when I am done with high school. I want to study to become a doctor and cure the children and teenagers.

August Expedition
- Participants are having the time of their lives, and are working hard, so they have let us know! At the Sunflower Home expeditioneers planted trees and flowers, worked on the farm, put the roof on the watch- tower and built adobes for it as well. At the nearby village of Tuscan, hygiene and new-born kits were distributed during training and the floor of the schoolhouse was finished!

Our Girls' Futures!
·
Katherine and Ron Alcatraz, of San Jose, CA, are raising money to vaccinate the girls at Girasol
with
the HPV vaccine to reduce their risk of getting cervical cancer. The International Cervical Cancer Foundation,
INCCA, works with a Peruvian registered non profit called CerviCusco to
vaccinate children. Dr. Daron Ferris, a Professor in the Department of
Family Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Medical College of
Georgia in Augusta, said the college would coordinate the 3 shots for
the HPV vaccination for $450 per child.
For
those of you who'd like more information regarding these efforts, you can email Ron and Katherine directly at us@alcatrazfamily.com. THANKS !

Adoption Miracle at the Sunflower:
Greg and Christy Anderson bumped
into Jhon 16 months ago while at the Sunflower Home.(Actually, Christy might have
accidentally hit Jhon with a shovel while they were working!) That day the Andersons, and Jhon, made a permanent connection which lead to where they are today: family!
After a long and determined adoption process, last week the Andersons had one of those days they will never forget - they finally were able to see Jhon and tell him the wait was over - the adoption process had been approved and after spending a few weeks together in Peru, they would all be heading back to Chicago to his new home.
Jhon is a remarkable 13 year old boy. He is always one of the first children to work alongside folks on the expeditions. He is kind to everyone and is a good student. One of his dreams is to travel and see the world - it's exciting to know this dream is coming true.
We're all thrilled for the Andersons even though we'll all miss seeing Jhon when we go to the Sunflower. Guess we'll have to make sure they all come to the banquets!

Heartbeats!
"When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable heartbeats."
· Big thanks to summer interns Sampson and Brittany for their work on the farm, help with the medical records, and sharing themselves with all our children.
·
Congratulations to Jenny Torgerson and all the performers at this
year's cabaret in Delaware. Their efforts brought in over $5000! Spectacular!!!
Thank you!
· Summer interns Nicki, Sampson and Brittany had just finished performing Snellens (letters on the familiar eye chart used to measure how well you see at various distances) on all the
children when they found out an eye doctor was with the AYS group and
had brought tons of glasses!! He did evaluations on the kids and five
of our kids needed glasses. Thanks AYS group!
· Thanks to Natalie Mano, & again our summer interns, the kids are
finally consistently drinking clean water! The children were given
individual water bottles and they are filling them up with water being
brought in for the expedition jug. They love it!
· Did you know chocolate milk is the new "Gatorade?" We greatly appreciate Karen Aukema for this idea because our kids are drinking it up! Many expedition folks this summer have hauled down powdered
chocolate milk in their luggage. It seems to be one of the big summer hits with our kids.
Thanks everyone!
· Mandy Gulbrandsen, of Draper, UT., wants to share the cool news: It's Spanish lessons via Skype! Check out: http://www.1on1spanish.net/howitworks.shtml
--------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you all for your support and for communicating your desires and efforts in helping Southern Cross Humanitarian. THANKS! laura@sxhu.org.
