$30 A Month
FEEDS A CHILD
and MORE!!

If you've ever considered how to make a big difference, with a limited budget, in the lives of many children, sponsoring a Drop-in center for $30 a month is the perfect opportunity!

Please help! Currently we have more children than sponsors.  We need at least 100 more sponsors to provide the care and assistance needed!

dropincenters

Drop-in Centers are feeding each child 2 meals a day, and helping provide education, in Peru and Colombia, for only $30 a month.

Drop-in Centers are about feeding children and much more! Above are some of the images captured by our friend Rachel Thurston while visiting Colombian Drop-in centers. Children in the centers are registered in school, provided with skill training, psychological care and a place to wash clothes and bathe.

Your $30 a month will provide all this for a child. Please start making the difference today.

The Life of Gabriel
By Gabriel
gabriel
(Dictated to & translated by 2007-08 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

Who am I?
I am Gabriel. I am six years old. I like to draw animals. I also like to play with balls. I like soccer a lot.  I like to eat chicken, rice, milk, and beef.

Before The Sunflower
I was born in Patia. I grew up in Cenipata. I lived with my mom. I was there with my sisters Wini and Zila. My sisters are good to me.  We had to leave my house because we were poor. Now, it is happier.

Now
Every morning, I clean my room and eat breakfast. After breakfast, I work in the fields with Papi Juan.  I cultivate the plants. I also play with my little car. In the afternoon, I play more with my sisters. I like The Sunflower because I like to play and there are toys here.

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is an orphanage.  Here we have beds, brooms, clothes, and combs. Here, I have brothers and sisters too. I like to play here with the balls and little cars.

My Future
In the future, I want to eat estofado (Peruvian dish) and guinea pig.  I am going to work, but I don't know what I want to be. I want to live in Patia again.  Maybe I will be a chef.

Recipients of this year's Microsoft Award were asked to designate a charity (or charities) to receive donations in their honor. Brian and Katherine Hill chose to bestow $80,000 to Southern Cross Humanitarian to #1- Create a drop-in center for homeless children in Cochabamba, Bolivia and #2- Help fund our efforts to create an orphanage in Colombia.  Our deepest thanks go to Microsoft and the Hills for this generous gift.

Specifically - Nicki completed all the MMRs this week!!! (Mumps, measles & rubella vaccinations) Everyone let's celebrate! This is great news and took tons of jumps through bureaucratic hoops. Special thanks to Dr. Benton and Dr. Lourdes for their help working on the children's medical files.

BYU Interns - Three interns, from the BYU Los Andes Intern Program through the Kennedy Center, are at the Sunflower Home concentrating on the farm this month.  Awesome opportunity for all of us! Thanks!

Chicken Coops - Our hard working June Expeditioneers were able to build chicken coops at the farm.  We now have chickens who should start producing eggs within a few months.

For more information on internships, or for purchasing chickens for the farm, please contact laura@sxhu.org.

First AYS Groups in July -
Alliance for Youth Service (AYS) is a non-profit service organization for youth ages 16-19. By day they have been working to help the children of Tucson, a high mountain Andean community about 6 to 7 miles from Pisaq. Education and hygiene are the immediate focus. Since there is no vehicle access, conditions are rough, but the work is progressing. In the evenings they have had numerous group activities with the Sunflower children.  Thanks AYS for all you are accomplishing!

Putting in your 2 cents can make a big difference!  Bookmarking and using GoodSearch, an internet search engine powered by Yahoo, is a great no cost way to help SXHU!  Just enter Southern Cross Humanitarian for your donation in the messages field and you're ready to search.  It costs you nothing, but each time you search they pay Southern Cross Humanitarian a penny.

Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru. 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower each year.
