New Child at the
Sunflower Home
!

We have a new child! Jhon is 7 years old and comes from Calca. His mom had him when she was very young and left him 6 months ago with his grandmother. He has 2 half brothers. His dad has not been heard of since he was born.

      newjhon
Jhon's grandmother could not afford to feed him and get him the help he needed. He cried for hours the first night at the home, but now he has adjusted very well.

Jhon is very intelligent and is excited about school. His grandma did well with his education, as he tested on grade level.

Jhon already has a lot of friends and is very kind spirited. He even helped carry the girl's laundry back to the home on the first wash day!

We need your help sponsoring Jhon. Sponsorship money provides food, shelter, clothing, educational opportunities and hope for the future.

The Life of Hilda
By Hilda
Hilda2
(Dictated to & translated by 2007-08 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

Who am I?
I am Hilda. I am nine years old. I am in the second grade. I don't know my birthday. I can speak in Quechwa and Spanish. I like to help Mami Delia and Papi Juan. I help make my bed and sweep my room. I also like to make frames for my photos. I have two photos.  I also have a bed.  I am a very good girl.

Before The Sunflower
I was born in Wakawasi. It is a little town near Lares. I grew up in Wakawasi with my mom, dad, and my brothers and sisters.  We didn't have money so my dad brought me here. I like this place because I love it.

Now
I love it here (at The Sunflower).  Every  morning, I sweep the floor and go to school. At school, I learn to read and write. I like to play with the ball in the afternoons.  Purfita is my friend. I like to play with Purfita. I sleep at night in my own bed. I sleep well in my bed. I like this home because it is wonderful.

What is The Sunflower?
This place is beautiful. Papi Juan and Mami Delia live here with all of the children. Here, I like my fruit, my clothes, and playing. I am happy here.

My Future
When I am finished with high school, I want to work. I want to be a cook in my house when I have a house. I also want to be a doctor because I want to help sick children.

Here is How to Make a HUGE Difference with No Cost to You!

colombia6

Register your Albertsons Preferred Customer card with Southern Cross Humanitarian as your charity.

By doing so, Albertsons will donate 1-3% of all your purchases to Southern Cross. This is a fundraiser where small amounts by many people can truly make a big difference!

All you need to do is email your name, address, phone# & Preferred Card#, to Ken@sxhu.org or complete the registration form on our website on our "How Can I Help" page. Registering Albertson's cards of friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers is an easy, no cost way to support Southern Cross and spread the word.

This is also a great service opportunity for high school & church youth groups as well as a qualifying Eagle Scout project: register people in front of a local Albertsons store - for more information contact Ken@sxhu.org.
Goodsearch Logo

Putting in your 2 cents can make a big difference!  Bookmarking and using GoodSearch, an internet search engine powered by Yahoo, is a great no cost way to help SXHU!  Just enter Southern Cross Humanitarian for your donation in the messages field and you're ready to search.  It costs you nothing, but each time you search they pay Southern Cross Humanitarian a penny.

Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru. 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower each year.

Our dear Guillermo Gavancho, seen here last June celebrating his birthday, passed away on May 18th. (1914-2008)

Southern Cross is grateful to him for providing the land on which the Sunflower home now sits, at a discounted price, so we could have a home for all of our Sunflower children. Sr. Gavancho was 94 years old. He leaves behind his wife, 8 children and dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gavancho Transition Fund - In honor of our original benefactor, Sr. Gavancho, Southern Cross would like to name a new fund in his honor. "The Guillermo Gavancho Transition Fund" is specifically for children at our Sunflower home who are ready to age out and are transitioning to the next step toward becoming self-sufficient. Fund monies will be dedicated solely to this purpose.  Part of the policies established include working closely with the Country Director to provide career aptitude testing, mentoring and money for educational and/or apprenticeship placement.  The program also specifies a policy for "giving back", either monetarily or with volunteer time, to maintain the fund for future generations of children.

We are pleased to have an initial generous donation to start the fund from a couple who went on last December's expedition. Thank you!  If you would like more information on the fund and/or to donate, please contact laura@sxhu.org.

Heartbeats!
lemonade
"When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable
heartbeats"

· Fresh Squeezed Lemonade!!! Thank you Curtis and Emily Covington (both age 7) of Sunnyvale, CA, who ran a lemonade stand at a neighborhood garage sale to raise money for the Sunflower children.  Curtis stated he had to get up early and squeeze 49 lemons, but it was worth it. They sold out of all of their lemonade, and the customers said it was "delicious."

· Thank you to Highlands Presbyterian Church, in Allendale, NJ, who have donated funds to expedite surgery for Yosimar's ears. Bobbie Burns, Chairperson of their Mission Committee, made the appeal and several of their members promptly responded to the opportunity to contribute.

· Women in a Woodland Park Relief Society, in Los Altos, CA.,
are having fun with a Sunflower project. They have tied a quilt, made hair bows, knitted caps and sweaters, sewn pajamas, put together welcome kits, and gathered important basics. They have been inspired by Mercedes Canham, a woman in their ward from the Highlands of Peru, whose story of the help she received as a child from a church organization, shows how one person really can make a difference. For the full story, visit our website at: www.sxhu.org and look under current events.

· Much appreciation goes to Sabrina Johnson of Palo Alto, CA, who donated a "green" laptop to send to the Sunflower orphanage.

· Speaking of "green", thanks go to the Reil Family - Kevin, Delyna, Madison (10), Peyton (7), Alex (4), and Ashton (1), (below on the left) of Mountain View, CA, who are collecting recyclables to earn money to buy a llama.

· Children at Heritage Elementary School in Layton, UT., (above on the right) sold Mammoth Sunflowers, Peruvian finger puppets, and certificates to sponsor a child for a day or week, at their May Carnival. Their efforts generated more than $1000! Great job team!

· Jackie Sheets, of Sunnyvale, CA, held a yard sale to clear out inventory from her on-line boys clothing store. She donated 1/2 of the proceeds of the sale, along with unsold highquality boys clothing to Southern Cross. Thank you Jackie!
