New Drop-in Center! Tupac Amaru - Cusco, Peru!

Our new Drop-in Center, Tupac Amaru, is named after the last indigenous leader of the Inca state of Peru. Located in southern Cusco, we already have 47 children registered and are feeding them two meals daily. With your help, we hope to remodel this building to include showers, laundry facilities and personnel to register all the children in school and provide tutoring and social services to help each child become self-sufficient.
Your help sponsoring this Drop-in center and helping scores of children, would be greatly appreciated - www.sxhu.org. |
Spotlight:
The Sunflower By Jhon
(Dictated to & translated by 2007 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)
Who am I? I am Jhon. I am thirteen years old and will turn fourteen in October. I would like to travel and see the world. I'd like to have a bike. I like to eat turkey and rice with chicken, and I like to play. My favorite food is cookies and cake with cream. I would like to have a discman and listen to music. I like to study and my favorite class is math. I like to study English, eat pizza, and play games. I like to listen to jokes and play with my friends. I like to take photos. I like to eat fruits such as mangoes, apples, and pears. I like to play with my friends. We play soccer, volleyball, draw, color, and much more.
Before The Sunflower I was born in Puerto Maldonado in 1993. I lived with my family for a long time. In 2006, I had a problem and my dad hit me. I didn't like it so I escaped from my house, traveled in a car, and arrived in Cusco. Afterwards, I walked in the street and stayed there. Then, a woman took me to the commissionary (half-way house). There were many children and many foreigners visited. I stayed for a month at the commissionary. Then a woman took me to a different place because they sent me to the home of Colibri on Lucre. There were fifteen boys. I was there many days and sometimes we worked. It was very nice. One day, some women came and asked us many things and closed the home of Colibri. We went to Cusco and searched for homes. The younger children went to the Jesus Miluz home. "We older children searched for a home and found one on the Avenue of the Sun. We stayed for three weeks. We looked for the home in Huayllabamba and happily came here.
Now I live in the home of The Sunflower. It is beautiful and I like to live happily and we play, study, and read. I live happily. I have things. I have a bed, clothes, a bedroom, a wardrobe, a bathroom, corn cobs, dogs, cats, and many more things. I wake up early and brush my teeth. Afterwards, we eat our breakfast with bread. Then, we work, play, and eat a lunch of delicious foods. We play soccer every day, and in the evenings, we eat dinner. Afterwards, we watch TV and go to sleep peacefully. I feel very happy in this home of The Sunflower.
What is The Sunflower? The Sunflower is a home where we, abandoned children, live. There are 30 of us and we live happily. To me, The Sunflower is important because we have good things. The Sunflower is important because we live happily. All of the happy children have Papi Juan, Mami Delia, Mami Eunice, and many aunts and uncles.
My Future I want to do many things, play, eat, help, work, study, and much more. I want to be a tourist who travels the world and does good things. I want to live at The Sunflower for many years and travel to big countries such as the United States, Lima, Brazil, and more because I want to travel and see the world and new things.

"I never look at the masses as my responsibility. I look at the individual. I can love only one person at a time. I can feed only one person at a time. Just one, one, one. You get closer to Christ by coming closer to each other. As Jesus said, "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me." So you begin....I begin. I picked up one person-- maybe if I didn't pick up that one person I wouldn't have picked up 42,000. The whole work is only a drop in the ocean. But if I didn't put the drop in, the ocean would be one drop less. Same thing for you same thing in your family same thing in the church where you go just begin...one, one, one."

So
You
Begin...
I Begin...
one,
one, one.
It's simple really. We each do one thing, and together we provide homes for thousands of children. "Pick up" one person, starting now -
· Sponsorship- Sponsor one specific child at the Sunflower home, or sponsor dozens in a Drop-in center - either way your monthly donation goes to rescuing children.*
· SAVE THE DATE- Mark your calendars on September 26th for the SXHU 2nd annual reunion and fundraising banquet! We look forward to seeing you all there. · General Donation- Overhead at SXHU runs between 7-10% so be assured your donation dollars go far. Currently we are seeking $500 donations to furnish dorm rooms to be home-base to dozens of children for years to come.
· Albertson Registration- Make a HUGE Difference with No Cost to You! Register your Albertsons Preferred Customer card with Southern Cross Humanitarian as your charity and 1-3% of your purchases go to SXHU. Signing up customers outside an Albertsons store is a great service project for School classes & Clubs and Church Youth groups. (See details below).
· Fundraising Event- THINK Globally, ACT Neighborly! Neighborhood dinners, church youth activities and community cabarets are just some of the fun and successful ways people are spreading the word and supporting SXHU. If you'd like to talk about some ideas of your own, contact laura@sxhu.org.
· Matching Grant- Biggest bang for your donation buck is to find matching grants at your work or in your community!
* Upon sponsorship, SXHU will
provide more details about your child, or Drop-in center, and invite
you to come to South America to develop a more personal relationship.
To sponsor one of these children, download the application here or contact ken@sxhu.org for more information. Thanks to all those who are making the world a better place for these children. |

Heartbeats! "When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable heartbeats"
· Reading for Alpacas was a big success with Students from West Canyon Elementary in Caldwell, ID! They reached their reading goals and exceeded their fundraising expectations! Big thanks to Kris Garman and her team for making it happen!
· Over 60 youths from Rolling Hills church in Moscow, Idaho donated and helped put together 50 hygiene kits, 16 newborn kits, 10 first aid kits & 50 school kits. The youths were shown the SXHU DVD first and then assembled the kits. We appreciated Rachel Pennington and the other adult leaders who made this possible.
· Much appreciation goes out to Dr. John Wynn, of Provo, UT., who has donated his time, advice and medical supplies to help the children in the Sunflower Home.
· Dr. Stacie Byers, of Pennsylvania, purchased and donated 1 laptop for our Sunflower home. Nicholas Negroponte developed a computer with internet capability specifically to help educate children in underdeveloped countries. Stacie bought us 1, and we'd sure love 14 more! For more information go to: http://olpc.com/.
· The Easter Bunny visited the Sunflower Home thanks to Chris Willis of Boulder, Colorado! Besides delivering goodies, Christine, who holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science / Educational Psychology and specializes in teacher development and curriculum development in math and science, is helping SXHU think through best educational practices for the children in our homes. Thanks Chris!
Please let us know how we can help you help Southern Cross. We would love to give you lots of support. For more info email laura@sxhu.org.
