My Life
By Yudi (Judy)
(Translated by Colleen Burns, our 2007 Summer School teacher)

Who am I?
I am Yudi. I am seven years old. I like cows. I also like to draw. I am friendly Yudi.

Before The Sunflower
I was born in Espinar. I grew up with Mayda, Adriel, my mom, my dad, and my sister Marisol. I came here a year ago.  My mom brought me because my mom was sick.

Now
Now, I live at The Sunflower.
Every day, we play, read, work, eat, and study. Here I have television, a DVD player, and dogs. Here, I am happy.

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is growing with things and children. The Sunflower is important because there are many good children here.  I like this place because we have a house here.

My Future
After high school, I want to go to the United States to study.  I also want to have a mother, and a house.

Accidents Happen
alexy
Seems like about once each year someone gets their chance to have a cast. This year it is our dear Purfita, helped here by Wini. No spectacular story, she simply fractured her foot while playing with the other kids at the Sunflower. (If she doesn't look too upset, it might be because we use the home's wheel barrel as a make-shift wheel chair. It's really a fun ride.)

Happy Holidays Dear Friends!

What a wonderful year for all of us here at Southern Cross Humanitarian thanks to each of you. We've laid concrete, built bathrooms, turned on electricity, created trout farms and much more, but upon reviewing what we've accomplished in 2007, it's the number of children that stands out:

20    Anta
80    Resbaloza
80    Espinal
278  Turbaco
40    Sunflower
--------------------
498 children

Next year, with your help, we'd like that number to more than double. We are well on our way too, with current development on the new Drop-in centers in Wanchaq (Cusco, Peru) and Cartagena (Colombia), plus an orphanage in Otavalo (Ecuador).

Each of these children has fears, dreams and hopes. It is a gift working with the volunteers of SXHU and watching all of you help calm children's fears and awaken their hopes and dreams. Thank you & Happy Holidays - from everyone here at Southern Cross Humanitarian.

It's Raining and It's Pouring, Yet  Progress! newdorm1

If monitoring the weather in Peru hasn't been a top priority, you may not know this has been an extraordinarily WET season down in the Sacred Valley! Despite the daily deluge, we are still making amazing progress on the last dorms, thanks to the efforts of Leo, Juan Carlos and their crew of workers.

While the rain is great for our alfalfa and sunflowers, it is problematic on adobe bricks. Since we have not been able to make as many of our own bricks as hoped, our expenses have increased. However, with a little luck, the dorms will still be ready to paint and furnish when the December expedition group arrives, making them ready for at least 10 more children, who have been displaced from the Earthquake, who are waiting for a place to call home. So, keep your holiday fingers and toes crossed!  If you'd like to donate to the construction fund go to: www.sxhu.org and check out the donation section.  Thank you!newdorm3

Colombia & Ecuador Progress
Turbaco
Colombia!
Our new
Turbaco home, in Cartagena will be run by volunteers such as Alicia and Moises Medrano. Moises is self-employed and has used his own income to feed kids off the street who were coming to this shelter. It was a hard call for them on a weekly basis: deplete family funds or let children go hungry? Fortunately Henri Ponnefz, a SXHU member, introduced us to the Medranos family and their situation. We are now working together remodeling a site to create a new Drop-in Center. Alicia Medrano is volunteering her time to manage the site with SXHU covering the costs. We, and the children, are in good hands with the Medranos'.

Ecuador! Two fields that are for sale. The lots are at the base of the Imbabura volcano in Otavalo, Ecuador. The first photo shows
the west lot (plowed) with Otavalo in the background. It is adjacent to the second lot shown which goes east all the way to the trees in the distance.  Both lots are for sale by different owners and total at least 10,000 SQ meters which is roughly twice the size of the Sunflower lot. We are hoping to get both for under $9000 to build a full orphanage with a farm attached. Power transformers and water are nearby, so we won't have the same problems as we had in Huayllabamba. What a cool Christmas present to dedicate land for our first Ecuador home in someone's name!  This indeed would be a gift that kept on giving!

Heartbeats
"When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable heartbeats"

· Eaglecrest Elementary students from Lehi, UT, just finished their "Let Reading Mooooooooove You".  Last year their "Read for Alpacas" won a Utah PTA award. This year's reading initiative raised enough money for dairy cows!

In addition, Maggie Moo ice-cream came to their assembly where they had a dance off with the top readers and teachers. They also turned Mr. Becker, the principal, into a human ice cream sundae. (He is a good sport.)  THANKS to everyone at Eaglecrest!!!!

· Congratulations to Laura Mabbott, SXHU President, and Michael Chabries for their upcoming wedding on Dec. 7th.  They want to especially thank all those in the Southern Cross family who join with them supporting the children under Southern Cross care. (Be aware of the name change in upcoming newsletters - Laura Chabries.)

· 100 wood cars were donated to the Sunflower Home by the Happy Factor in St. George, UT. Susan Gleed,  organized volunteers from the Farmington Jr. High honors society and the achievement day girls from the Haight Bench ward in Kaysville to put the cars together and add a polished finish to them. When the Happy Factory found out SXHU was associated with Richard Evans and his book, they said they'd love to donate shipping the cars for us too!

· A Pleasanton, CA LDS church, 3rd ward, put all the Sunflower children's names on a little tree in their foyer to "adopt" for Christmas. One mother took 3, one for each of her kids. Their ward Christmas Social is dedicated to making Christmas stockings, quilts and other gifts for the Sunflower. A local middle school math teacher heard of the project and is having his students give items for the children also. Thanks for helping us with Christmas!

· The Boise ID, branch of "Daughters of Utah Pioneers" joined together and donated money to help SXHU supply school uniforms and admission fees for newly arriving children.  Thank you for your thoughtful holiday gift!

· Katie Ryser, of Holladay, UT, whose family is taking down Christmas items to Peru, put an announcement in her church bulletin, Holladay 28th ward, to help the orphans in our homes. Her efforts raised more than $1100.  Much appreciation for all your generosity!

· Cub Scouts, from the Saratoga, CA area, were at it again this year!  Last year they created "Christmas in a suitcase", and this year they gathered materials to make building blocks and train sets to donate to our homes!  WAY TO GO!

Thank you for being part of the Southern Cross Humanitarian Family.  Bridging cultures, awakening hopes and dreams-one child at a time - we will make the world a better place.

Sincerely,

Laura Mabbott-President
