New Children at the
Sunflower Home:
There is never a shortage of people who are in need of help. Maria and her daughter came to the Sunflower one afternoon while the kids were in school. Tentatively she explained she'd heard there were "people who will help you at the Sunflower home".
As the story unfolded, we discovered Maria had been living on the streets with her baby for several weeks. Her husband was so abusive she decided to leave even though she had no other friends or family to take her in.
Maria simply asked if we could help her get food and clothes for her baby. Fortunately, we were able to provide that and in addition, we were able to give her a newborn and hygiene kit as well, thanks people like you who assemble and donate them on a regular basis.
Money you send down to sponsor a child helps not only our children, but also helps people like Maria in the form of food and clothes.
You can sponsor a child by going to our website at www.sxhu.org.

Spotlight:

El Girasol (The Sunflower)
by Zila
(Dictated to & translated by 2007 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)
Who am I?
I am Zila and am seven years old. My birthday is during the Peruvian festivals (early spring). I am in the first grade and live in Huayllabamba. I like to play with little horses and dolls. I have a doll named Candy. I also like to complete my homework from school. I am a very funny and intelligent girl.
Before The Sunflower
I was born in Patia. I grew up in Patia as well. Patia is close to Cuzco. I lived with my mom and dad. I went to the kindergarten in Patia. My mom went to Cuzco. My dad abandoned my mom and me. My mom couldn't care for me. Therefore, my mom brought me here to The Sunflower. I like this place because it is wonderful.
Now
Now, I live at The Sunflower with my Mami Delia and Papi Juan. Here, we have beds, wardrobes, and clothes. Every morning, I comb my hair, brush my teeth, and change my clothes. After breakfast, I go to school. Today, I read my cocito (basal reading book) at school. After school, I return here and eat lunch. I do my homework in the afternoon. I like to play with my doll. I like The Sunflower because it is beautiful and I am happy here.

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is a home of children. We have sunflowers, food, and water. It is important because I live here. Mami Delia and Papi Juan also live here. I am happy here because I am safe and I have everything I need.
My Future
After high school, I want to work in my house. I am going to sweep the room, wash the clothes, and cook in the kitchen. I want to help people when I am working. I also want to continue living in Huayllabamba because it is beautiful. When I am not working, I want to play volleyball with a team. I want to play other games too.

July Expedition
lights up the place!
July 19th was a sweet day at El Girasol (The Sunflower). The July group worked at lightning speed and their completed project list shows their amazing results:
· Finished pouring concrete in the computer room
· Put final touches on the main gate
· Planted power poles & hung electrical wiring
· Moved adobe bricks
· Beautified the walks with flowers
· Fixed the leak in the water line that was emptying the water tank
· Installed new outside lights
· Scraped, cleaned and finished the entire sidewalk to the bathrooms and the comedor decorating it with chakana and sunflower designs.
"The sidewalk will be beautiful when it cures. The colors of the stone will shine through to give love to the children. They will dance and play and imagine new worlds, as Shel Silvertstein wrote, "away from the dark streets" (of Peru) into a new world cooled by the peppermint wind, and only the children know in chalk white arrows where the sidewalk ends..." (expedition leader)

Southern Cross
Happenings:
· The 2nd Annual Sunflower Benefit Cabaret! Directed and coordinated by Jenny Torgerson of Wilmington, Delaware, this cabaret event was outstanding! Included in the talented line-up were The Imagination Players, a group of children who volunteer their time to perform song and dance routines at benefits, who opened the show singing "Seize the Day". Musical performances riveling the best shows on Broadway, combined with the desire to do something to help others, made for a magical evening. To get all the details on the performers and evening, read the article from the town's local paper: Sunflower Benefit Cabaret:

WE'RE OVER $220 AND CLIMBING!
Putting in your 2 cents can make a big difference! Bookmarking and using GoodSearch, an internet search engine powered by Yahoo, is a great no cost way to help SXHU! Just enter Southern Cross Humanitarian for your donation in the messages field and you're ready to search. It costs you nothing, but each time you search they pay SXHU a penny. It may not seem like much, but 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower.
Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru. Remember to enter "Southern Cross Humanitarian" as your charity of choice.

Make a HUGE Difference
with No Cost to You!
Register your Albertsons Preferred Customer card with Southern Cross Humanitarian as your charity.
By doing so, Albertsons will donate 1-3% of all your purchases to Southern Cross. This is a fundraiser where small amounts by many people can truly make a big difference!
All you need to do is email your name, address, phone# & Preferred Card#, to Ken@sxhu.org. We also have a registration form on our website on our "How Can I Help" page. Registering Albertson's cards of friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers is an easy, no cost way to support Southern Cross and spread the word.
Currently we have 257 completed registrations, so that would figure to about $2,500 per year.
This is also a great service opportunity for high school & church youth groups as well as a qualifying Eagle Scout project: register people in front of a local Albertsons store - for more information contact Ken@sxhu.org.
