Anta Home
and
New Children:
Anta-Nun & child

The Hogar de Niñas (Little girl's home) in Izcuchaca, Anta
, is supported in part by sponsors from Southern Cross Humanitarian (a Model 2 type SXHU home). If you are an individual or company looking for a place where a little money can make a tremendous impact to numerous children, being a team sponsor to help these children is it.

All the girls in the Anta home have been abused and/or abandoned and are now in the care of three amazing nuns. The goal of this home is to provide a safe and loving shelter while social workers work with parents of the abused girls to change the dynamics in the home and find permant placement with relatives for those who are orphaned or abandoned.

During the school year, the center provides lunch for up to 80 additional children before their 3 hour walk home up into the mountains from school. Although the home has amazing greenhouses producing tomatoes and other vegetables enviable by any professional farmer as well as some assistance for food costs from the Peruvian government, the nuns still fall financially short each month to provide care for all these children.

As a sponsor for th
e Anta Home, your monthly donation, of any amount, will help cover food costs and other necessities. SXHU plans on fixing the bathrooms, which are currently in severe disrepair, on a summer expedition.

To see additional photos of the girls at this home, please go to www.sxhu.org and look under Sponsor-A-Child.

Dayana & book
El Girasol (The Sunflower)
by Dayana
(Dictated to & translated by 2007 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

Who am I?
My name is Dayana and I´m 9 years old.  I turned 9 on February 19 in this year 2007. My favorite foods are rice with chicken, cake, chocolate chip cookies, and baked turkey.  These are my favorite foods.  I am an obedient girl in my class with Aunt Colleen and I obey adults and do what I am told by adults and my Papi Juan and Mami Delia.  I am a very friendly girl with people and Papi Juan and Mami Delia.

Before El Girasol
I was born in Urubamba.  I grew up in Cusco with my mom, dad, brothers, and sisters.  I don´t have a mom, my mom died when she was going to help her friend, and someone killed her.  Then a man came to collect me.

Now
I live at El Girasol.  El Girasol is very beautiful.  I live with my brothers and sisters.  I have books, a bathroom, beds, wardrobe, and a jacket among other things.  I am healthy, go to school and I have a new mother named Delia and a father named Juan.

dayana2

What is El Girasol?
El Girasol is like a home to us.  We have very good parents named Eunice, Delia, Juan, Leonidas, and Mami Laura.  They are very good with us.  The home is important to us because we are healthy, happy, and have clothes and shoes.  This home means a house with brothers and sisters.  We live very well.

My future
After high school, I want to go to the United States to visit my Aunt Colleen and I want to become a professional.  I think I will be a police officer who catches thieves, liars, and people who commit crimes.  I want to live in the United States with my Aunt Colleen, and Mami Laura.  I want to meet Aunt Colleen´s mom and brothers.

Greetings,

"Summer afternoon" -  Henry James said those were the two most beautiful words in the English language.  Southern Cross Humanitarian would be thrilled to share  a few summer afternoons with you. Whether it's getting sponsors and training to run a Marathon, climbing around the ruins of Machu Picchu, or attending your backyard "fun"-raiser for Southern Cross,  we look forward to joining you!
Percy
Adoption Miracle at Southern Cross!

Tiffany met Percy on an expedition almost 2 years ago when Colibri was still in operation. She knew then she wanted to adopt him.  However, with only 26 international adoption permits handed out last year, the odds seemed overwhelming.  Still, she knew it was the right thing to do, and after extensive work, Tiffany was able to go pick up Percy just last month to take him to live with his new family in Seattle. Congratulations to you both!

Percy likes to ride bicycles, read, eat chicken and LOVES to play soccer. He ran away from an abusive father and was found on the streets of Cusco by the police who took him to the Colibri home for boys.  He came over to the Sunflower home last January when the government closed down Colibri and enjoyed rooming with Naftali.  One of his dreams is to play on an American soccer team, and it looks like now he'll get the chance.
Colombia Update
&
SXHU Project:

When someone mentions "Colombia", for many of us, the images conjured are of Drug Lords, open jeeps speeding through jungles and maybe a few random scenes from Romancing the Stone. Although it is true some places like Cali are still too dangerous for Southern Cross, because Guerilla war is still pervasive and the Cali cartel is very much in control, other parts of Colombia are safe and awaiting our help.

Our first Drop-in Center in Colombia will be in Turbaco, 30 minutes away from the Cartegena CBD peninsula with your help!  This area is not violent and currently there stands a make- shift refuge where 238 kids come by 2x a week for a glass of milk. There are no sewers, water is contaminated, homes include roofs of plastic with cardboard and babies are covered in flies.

The 3 women you see are from Turbaco and are doing what they can for the many street children. They are working to help secure land for us, hopefully at no charge, and have contacted local churches who have already volunteered to provide labor.

Look at the children's faces in Cartagena and the sweet spirit they carry.

Happenings:

Gabriel, Evelyn, Lurdes, Daniel, Juan, and Vilma have all been at Resbaloza for almost two years now. They are among the scores of children who drop in daily for food and refuge.  Although a fully operational urban drop-in-center, we aim to provide even more services by the end of the summer.  A $5000 donation can create a drop-in-center and around $300 a month covers all the costs including food, wages and overhead in Peru.  If you are interested in sponsoring or creating a drop-in-center, please contact us.

· SAVE SEPTEMBER 28th!  Mark it on your calendars!  Secure your flights into Ut. for the weekend!  Southern Cross Humanitarian is having its first fall banquet.  It will be a grand reunion for all the Expedition folks, and a fabulous evening to introduce friends & family to SXHU while you mix, mingle and make a difference.  Look for more details to follow!

· Hit the Refresh button!  SXHU website has made some changes!
One of the most often asked questions when people hear about Southern Cross is, 'How can I help?'  We now have a page on our website with many ways people can help. Included are lists of humanitarian kits taken to Peru by expedition participants which organizations or church groups can put together, suggestions for your own fundraisers and no-cost options like signing up your friends and neighbors for the Albertsons Community Partners program &  Run For the Children!  If you're participating in any type of race this summer and would like to make SXHU a part of it, check out our new page: http://sxhu.org/runners.html

Expeditions Can Change the World:

Simplest of moments make extraordinary
Expeditions

This year marks our 5th expedition season, when individuals travel to the heart of Southern Cross Humanitarian to support the children and people of South America.  Participants work hard, offering time, effort and love to construct buildings, teach children, provide medical assistance, and offer community support.  Coming face to face with the scarcity and lack in a child's face, participants realize how much is needed - more shelter, clothing and food to provide physical care, more services to educate the children - and want to keep on giving.

Southern Cross Humanitarian wants to fulfill these needs, and has exciting plans to continue expanding throughout South America.  To do so, we ask for your support.  If you haven't joined us on an expedition, we hope you will consider it in your future, and invite your friends to join us as well to
experience a personal journey of the heart. It isn't too late to sign up for the summer trips!

We also want to tell more people about the lives we are changing.  Please help us introduce Southern Cross to the individuals, foundations, or corporations you know.  Simply click on this link, ken@sxhu.org, and tell
us the best time and way to contact you.  We'll get the names and addresses of those you know and send them an introductory package which includes our DVD and brochure.  Thak you for partnering with us to create sustainable, long term changes for children throughout the world.

June Expeditions start heading out next week.  We wish them well on completing their projects!

"When people donate

they
are
giving of their valuable heartbeats"

·
Congratulations to  Eaglecrest School!  Their Read for Alpaca's program just won the Utah State PTA reading incentive award at the PTA Convention at BYU. Because so many schools are wanting more information, a website as been created where schools can go to download all the materials created.  You can also see the Power Point presentation that further explains the program.  To view their website and materials go to: http://www.timesquared.net/alpacas.

· 5 year old Alexy Downer of Palo Alto, CA, earned $20 the same day she heard she was going to a "dinner for orphans".  While at the dinner that night, she came up and handed her $20 to the organizer of the fundraising dinner and said, "I heard giving money will make these orphans happy."  Ahhh, through the eyes of children....

· Three 3rd graders from Heritage Oaks School in Lehi, UT, cleaned out their closets, their desks, and their toys to do a week long Southern Cross garage sale every day after school. Together they raked in almost $60 bucks!  That, in combination with the other fundraisers the 3rd grade class sponsored, raised over $1900!  Thanks 3rd graders!  (And their parents -;)

· Greg and Christy Anderson recently held a SXHU block party in Chicago, Illinois raising over $10K and Quinn Brady of Cupertino, CA did the footwork for a local dinner raising over $6K. SXHU sends $4000 a month to Peru to cover the needs of our children & salaries of the people working at the Sunflower Home. Money raised at these events goes directly to Peru for these purposes.

Goodsearch is an internet search engine powered by Yahoo.
It costs you nothing, but for each time you search they pay SXHU a penny.   It may not seem like much, but 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower.

Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru.  Enter "Southern Cross Humanitarian" as your charity of choice.
