New Children at Sunflower Home & Hungry Kids:
Carlos, seen here practicing new soccer moves (a rainbow?) on the lawn at the Sunflower Home, is one of the boys who have moved over from Colibri and is among 8 new children at our home.
Ten more are on waiting lists, and we need your help. Southern Cross makes every effort to obtain legal guardianship of children before assigning them to sponsors, yet we still incur the costs of providing housing, food, clothes school and medical costs. Right now we have a family of 6, the youngest 2 the oldest 15 and mute, found with no parents or food living in horrid conditions. The other 4 on our list are in similar circumstances.... all hungry and in dire need. We have decided to try and help them now, not after the judge gets around to signing the documents and we are able to find them sponsors!
Please consider contacting family, co-workers and friends to help support these "transitional children", by sponsoring a room or making donations to the general fund. Together we will help all these children.

You see here the happy winners for the new weekly point system. Children are awarded points for clean doors, brushing their teeth, engaged reading and other daily chores. Points are tallied at the end of the week, and the winners get to hop on the bus with Colleen and pick their own flavor ice-cream in Urabamba! It is rumored that competiton is fierce!

A new bilingual picture book will be helping our children in Peru. Karl Beckstand, author and illustrator of Crumbs on the Stairs, is donating $1 from all his Feb. book sales to Southern Cross Humanitarian, as well as copies of his book.
We thank Karl for his donations. His book can be found at Amazon, or by going to http://gozobooks.com/.

General SXHU Updates:
· Our sweet Mayda (on the right) was in the hospital this week. Fortunately nothing serious happened thanks to our quick thinking Sunflower helpers. We knew she was okay when upon realizing there were delivering mother's in the next room she asked, "Is the bag that the baby grows in made of plastic?"
· Summer School is progressing nicely either at the Sunflower with Colleen, or morning classes at the village school. Hijidia can now write her name, Adriel is learning trig., English in the afternoon is a big hit, reading after lunch seems to get ditched a lot, and some of the kids aren't doing their homework. All "normal" kid stuff.... ahhhh, that is nice to hear!
· Thanks to Stacie Byers and her friends, the gate for our security wall should be in place within a few weeks. The bathrooms are getting closer. Sometimes we have to choose between feeding kids and putting down tile. This picture shows happily feed kids. (-:)
· We'd love to get going on building the 3rd dorm, finishing the intern rooms so we can accommodate medical staff, teachers and other specialists to work with our children year round, construct the school and the Health/Admin. wing. If you're interested in doing a local fundraiser to help, please contact us for our Fundraising Packet. We'd sure love to help you help us!

Goodsearch is an internet search engine powered by Yahoo.
It costs you nothing, but for each search performed they will pay us a penny. It may not seem like much, but 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower.
Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru. Enter "Southern Cross Humanitarian" as your charity of choice.
